Here’s how to turn your walk or any cardio exercise into a super-effective, mindful workout!

My article “Why Solo Walks Should be Your New Best Friend” resonated with many readers. From the article, readers most appreciated the fact that we don’t need to wait for a companion to go for a walk. Actually, it is most beneficial to do cardio (like running, hiking, walking, and biking) on your own. I am going to share my personal, perfected tactic that takes my cardio workout to the next level. And when I say “next,” I mean higher: you will reach a much higher mental and spiritual level.

Here is the breakdown of my hiking or running/walking practice:

While hiking or running, I always use my headphones and listen to my podcast or music; however, there is a specific no-listening and listening strategy I use while I run/walk.

The first part — The first 5–10 minutes of my hike, I do not yet listen to anything. I use this time to clean up my head; whatever is in there, I go through it very quickly and acknowledge it without any judgment. I especially avoid any single-person dialog. (You know that type of dialog where you say something, and then you answer for your boss or your ex, and then repeat?) You really don’t want to ruin the time you have dedicated to yourself for your workout with someone else’s negative energy. So…
