Yes!! I've had this same realization recently.

It was my ego who wanted me to play it safe, to cling to the familiar, and to resist any notion of stepping beyond the boundaries of what I already knew. It was my ego who shielded me from potential failure, but in doing so, it also shielded me from the vast possibilities that lay beyond the edges of my comfort zone.
