What kind of exercise is Pilates?

After talking with my Pilates Studio members, I’ve come to realize that even after a few years, Pilates fans still need clarification about where Pilates stands within the exercise categories. They come to me for weight loss tips or ask questions like, “Why aren’t I losing weight doing just Pilates?” They are almost always surprised when I also recommend doing cardio exercises. You see, they assume Pilates covers everything their bodies require to lose weight and tone muscles.

So, I would like to discuss Pilates in comparison with other forms of exercise, which will help you gain more clarity on the journey of shaping your body.

Pilates is a resistance and strength exercise. It helps you gain muscle strength, makes your body look more toned, and helps maintain bone density, which is essential for preventing osteoporosis. It is in the same category as lifting weights in the gym. So, what is the difference between Pilates classes and gym workouts?

Weights: In the gym, you use dumbbells and exercise machines to work on individual muscle groups. In Pilates, you use the Reformer, where you pull the straps to work on…
