Shape your body by using your make-up tricks!
Getting in shape is like the Art of Human Body Sculpting.
Many of us throw in the towel when it comes to health and fitness; we don’t even try to fight the challenges and barriers standing in our way. We believe that, in order to achieve our goals, we need to be experts who follow the most recent trends in the field. And we feel the same way when it comes to transforming our bodies (getting in shape, making our muscles stronger, making our bones more resilient, and increasing our stamina). Many people believe that, unless they find the ‘secret’ exercise to create the 6-pack or the miraculous butt-shaping moves, they will never be able to achieve their ideal bodies.
When I talk to potential clients (or anyone interested in bringing her body to the next level), they often ask me, “Which is more important for getting into shape: cardio, or weight workouts? Which exercise is best for butt-lifting?” I answer them with a question of my own: “Which cosmetic brush is more important, the one you use to apply the foundation or the one you use to apply the eyeshadow?” You see, both brushes have their own special purposes, and they are both important for helping you to look beautiful — just like each exercise tool is uniquely important when you’re sculpting a beautiful statue.
As you go through the different phases of sculpting, you must change the tools accordingly, just like the sculptor does:
1. You begin with a huge block of clay. With your big spatula, you start slicing off all the extra clay to form the block into the body’s general shape. At this stage, you are not worried about the details of the mouth and eyes, or the exact shape of the arms and legs. So, when it comes to getting your own body into shape, for the first stage, your main “tool” is any cardio exercise: walking, hiking, running, biking, tennis, or Zumba dancing, for example, to take off any “extra clay.”
2. After you’ve achieved the general body shape, you switch from your spatula to a finer tool for shaping the arms, legs, head, and midsection of your body. In this stage, your own body shaping “tools” are weights and resistance workouts, to start building muscles. These tools include dumbbells and rubber resistance band exercises at home, Pilates, and gym workouts with weights and resistance equipment.
3. Once you have all the body parts shaped for your sculpture, you start working on the fine details: hair, eyes, mouth, fingers. This phase in your own body sculpting process consists of exercises that target specific muscles. These are customized workouts that focus on specific “stubborn” muscles: biceps, triceps, abdominal muscles, glutes, hamstrings, etc. However, there is no secret or specific exercise that shapes muscles better than the other exercises. There is a specific sequence of exercises and an amount of weight to use which determines the size of your muscles (more weight = bigger muscles). You can either use customized gym or at-home workouts with weights, dumbbells, ankle weights, and resistance bands. My personal favorite sculpting tool is Pilates because it is just the right amount of resistance for building a lean, strong body.
4. The final phase of the sculpting process is enjoying and maintaining your Masterpiece. In order for the clay sculpture to last without suffering any weather or pollution damage, it has to be maintained on a regular basis; otherwise, it will fall apart. This phase, for your own body, will consist of regularly cycling through all three workout phases without stressing, but rather, with joy. This means doing cardio you enjoy, like trying out any sports that catch your interest (golf, tennis, kickboxing, pickleball) combined with fun weight workouts and group classes, like spin class or yoga. This phase entails doing anything physical that sparkles and shines your Masterpiece.
And now, I will share my true secret with you. Based on all my experiences, through years of coaching, of knowing all the exercises in and out of the gym, with weights or no weights, the BEST exercise to get your body into a shape that will finally satisfy you and make you proud is…the LOVE for your body. When you exercise because you love your body, you create a strength that is more powerful than any steroids. I call it Bliss. (If you are interested in reading more about how exercising creates Bliss, you can read about it here: Exercise Can Be the Cheapest Form of Therapy).
You see, it is not the make-up brushes or the sculptor’s tools that create a beautiful piece. It is the Love and passion which guide the sculptor to create the dream image. When you love your body, every day you will be able to sense what your body specifically needs in that moment. Is it a big brush? Is it a smaller brush? The right tool is the one that feels right for your body in the moment.
So, are you ready to finally have a strong and happy body? Stop wasting your time searching for the kick-butt exercise and, instead, find the love for your body and stay connected with it every day, because this love doesn’t just create — it will also keep you away from any junk food drive-throughs!
Cheers to your loving sculpting!
