Are All Those Fitness Gadgets Really Helping Us?

Or are they actually sabotaging our effort to shape our bodies?

If someone were to ask you today, ‘How Free are you?’ what would be your Freedom number?

On a scale of 0 to 10, what is your freedom number? How many things (electronics, Apps, TV shows, food, other people’s opinions, etc.) do you depend on in your daily life? I am amazed by everyday technological progress and all the “gadgets” that are supposed to ease our lives. But I always wonder whether, in the long run, they are actually helping us become better versions of ourselves and, most of all, completely free… or are we actually becoming a gadget-dependent society? (Please note: I am not talking about medical devices that are helping to heal or monitor serious health conditions.) I am talking about knowing our own bodies more than our gadgets do. If you were stranded on an island, just like Chuck in the movie Cast Away, would you be able to survive? Would you know how to take care of your body?

My biggest concern is all the technology that is supposed to help us take care of and improve the fitness level of our bodies: counting the steps we take throughout the day, adding up our calories, logging how much we ate during the day, and tracking whether we are getting sufficient sleep. Honestly, do we really need someone else to tell us if we are sleepy?

Yes, it might sound comical, but it’s actually very sad for me to observe how gadget-dependent we have become.

For example, just the simple motion of getting up and turning on the lights, turning on the music, or closing the shades on our windows instead of calling out to Alexa to do it all for us will add a tiny bit of calorie expenditure (I know it’s tiny, but over a lifetime, these things add up). And what if one day Alexa says “No”? It worries me that, every time the newest “hot item” comes out to make life easier for us, it is actually another step toward the disconnection from our Inner Selves. Please read my article Magic Pill to find out why it is important to stay connected to our Inner Selves if we want to lose weight or get fit and strong. As you know, the muscles that aren’t used will atrophy. Inaction results in atrophy or decline — and that includes the “loving muscle” that makes us human beings instead of robots.

This disconnect is not just affecting our physical bodies (shape, strength, mobility), but it has become even more damaging on the level of our freedom. For example, you experience more freedom if you are walking because you want to feel good and nurture your body and soul, than you do if you are walking because your Fit Bit is dictating that you need to make another 1000 steps. Instead of experiencing the freedom of fully enjoying your healthy lunch, you might keep checking your calorie count to make sure you are still within your daily calorie budget.

This is how my Freedom looks: I work out when I feel like it (almost every day), and I do it because I love the feeling of it — not because my watch tells me I need to do it. I eat whatever makes me feel good at the moment, not what my calorie counting calculator tells me I am “allowed” to eat. I also keep in mind that I want to feel good tomorrow, too — please read my article explaining how to do it: How to win the fight: a bag of chips vs. your goal to lose weight).

If you step back (actually, climb up to a higher vantage point) and see two people, one with all the gadgets and one who has none but who knows her body and is fully connected to her Inner Being — who do you think is more powerful? Who is more equipped to make her dreams come true, to light up a whole room when she walks in, to shape her body, and to be “immune” to her past, to gossip, to setbacks, and to other people’s opinions?

Who do you think has more power: you, who are able to eat balanced foods based on listening to your body — or the one who is controlled by her diet’s specified calorie count? And most importantly, which power is sustainable? Can you live a truly happy life when you are constantly checking your calorie boundaries and counting the calorie value of each bite you take? I could not enjoy my freedom if I depended on technology to keep my body in shape; I would feel like I was a slave to the technology, and that is the opposite of what freedom feels like.

When you are connected to your Inner Self, you are more powerful than millions of people who have all the gadgets but who are not connected to their Inner Selves.

And that’s why I make sure to connect to my Inner Self. (And that’s also what I teach my clients to do.) SHE is my best “Gadget,” and SHE knows me better than all those technologically advanced gadgets combined. SHE knows which foods are best for your body, when to go for a walk, when to work out, and which kinds of exercises are good for you. SHE knows when you are lacking those sleeping hours — seriously, do you really need an App to tell you that you are sleepy??

See, if you try to achieve the shape of the outside world, you will never be satisfied. Why? Because they are still trying to invent THE GADGET for that; if there were one, we wouldn’t have so many Apps and gadgets for shaping bodies! However, if instead you match the shape of your Inner Self — pure, loving, and so full of LIGHT — I promise you, SHE will guide you to your best body: fit, strong, and full of LIGHTness and happiness.

Happiness/unhappiness is the fragrance of your being. When you connect with your Inner Self, your body will produce a fragrance that you will never want to change… not even when you are sweating while working out!

Take the time to connect to your Inner Self and remain loyal to HER. SHE is the love with which you were created, and the love by which you will create the body you’ve always wanted.

….and that is Freedom at a PERFECT 10!
